31 New Republic: The Child 05

At this point we will try to be as clear as possible about the implications related to transition from children to adults.

For those interested in deepening these fascinating subjects (fascinating in my opinion), I suggest that you should read what wrote Eric Berne about Transactional Analysis, or what wrote his friend and pupil Tomas Harris. Transactional Analysis has a big drawback for those who want to feel himself important: it is too simple; for this reason, I find it more effective than it might have spelled Freud. The underlying concepts are actually very complex and it is not a simplification of the triad of Freud (id, ego, and super-ego) but a sufficiently different triad (Parent, Adult, Child) to capture the dignity of independent psychoanalytic system. I suggest that you look for on the Internet  ‘Transactional Analysis’: you will find descriptions and bibliography that here it’s not worth repeating.

In summary then, Berne tells us that a person has three mental subdivisions, or that his mind can divide into three States:

Parent: contains all the things he learned from his parents, internalized in his mind and are divided into Normative Statements and Emotional Statements. A person prefers to receive Emotional Statements, but if the Normative Statements are missing completely he always feels forgiven and then, in life, he would be in trouble. We therefore also need the Normative Parent, especially to avoid the things that can generate irreparable mistakes.

Adult: begins when we start to walk, say by nine months onwards. It’s a real computer that calculates the odds and tells us (to the Child referred hereunder) what we should do. If spoiled (contaminated by the Parent) in some cases, it can  conclude that 2 + 2 = 22.

Child: is the person seen as feelings, as targets, like inventions, like flashes of genius, like ability to make teasing, as rebellion, as adaptation to bullied, as homeostatic balance, including how to adapt to reality. The Child survives because he wants to continue to live, to experience, to learn, to compete with others. He uses the adult to assess but actually he makes decisions.

The initial capital letters denote the above States to distinguish them from natural persons.

After this introduction, we point out that even a nation, a community, has a Parent, an Adult and a Child. Much more successful will this nation be as more homogeneous will be the three States (PAC).

If to change States (PAC) of a person can be relatively easy, to change the PAC of a nation, of a community, is an enterprise verging on the impossible.

If moreover the components of a community are of different cultures, or if there are significant differences between the various P, various A and various C, it won’t even thinkable.

The difference between the USA and Europe is this: without discussing here whether the United States are better or worse on respect of Europe, let us consider for a moment the formation of the United States: in a primeval core (Mayflower) the new citizens were added gradually,  migrants who have entered into the existing PAC without creating dichotomies or excessive contention for slow assimilation to create a semblance of uniformity. The problems of blacks brought as slaves and not voluntarily in this osmosis have created true whole series of derived questions and the American civil war (1861) between Northerners and Southerners, caused by the problem of the slaves, was not really a total war, at least psychologically, because the two sides had dealt with the war of independence (1775): important, because in the war of 1775 there was a merger of the three States of the community, PAC. The PAC of negre populations has not been entered in the osmotically US’ PAC. Latin American populations are not fully engaged (not yet fully assimilated PAC) but these populations were not deported at least.

Not so for the European Community, where the differences will last for millennia: the more the identitarian tripartition PAC, the easier the unification. Do you see what they have in common the Germans or Scandinavians with southern Italians or Greeks?

In Europe it will be essential to an effort by two or three hundred years, admitted that starting from political configurations similar to ethnic configurations, that is with the same Parent, with the same Adult and with the same Child. If France has solved the problems of the Celtic and Francs peoples, certainly they didn’t yet solved the problems of Maghrebian societies (PAC is maintained different) and the same applies to England, where the populations have entered as part of the Commonwealth, and then with their dignity and relative PAC. In Germany, for example, the colonial relationship is not exaggerated and the Turks know that they need to be more flexible.

The colonial period is therefore presenting the Bill.
